Hobart's Landmark: Wrest Point Hotel and Casino

Wrest Point casino and entertainment complex was the first casino hotel developed in Australia and Hobart's signature landmark in Sandy Bay. Hobart is the capital of Tasmania, Australia.

This 4 star hotel includes a 16 storey tower adjoining the original Wrest Point Motor Inn, occupying 4.5 hectares of waterfront land overlooking the Derwent River, with 3 star motor inn rooms, providing the hotel with flexible catering for all market sectors.

Special rates, not generally available through the hotel direct, vary widely on the International Hotel Search.com website that offers a rate of $143 per night for a harbour front room, whereas most of the rates were in excess of $200 a night. All rooms are of a standard size, which is a little on the small size and furnishings were quite good.

The hotel has a broad range of food and beverage facilities such as the Birdcage Bar, with the main gaming hall nearby; a bar and an auditorium called Blackjacks; The Asian Restaurant. Concert acts include a number of ageing international stars. There is also the 60's an 70's music lounge where local entertainers play and Regines Nightclub, principally for the younger set.

Tasmania's only revolving restaurant on the 17th floor, known as The Point is a fine dining restaurant offering an excellent cuisine and service, not found too often in hotels, with panoramic views of the Hobart skyline and waterfront.

The Boardwalk terrace offers a choice of inexpensive, pre-prepared meals whether a hearty soup, fish and chips, a farmhouse pie, Chinese dishes, sandwiches, shepherds pie, or carvey. All tables overlook the water and mostly located outside. The Boardwalk also has a bar.

The 1,600-capacity conference center and the casino are the two major features of the hotel, which features roulette, blackjack, baccarat, Caribbean stud poker, keno, a wheel of fortune and of course rows and rows of poker machines. With $2 minimum bets on the tables, poker machines start at 5 cents. Table games in the main casino are open from 2pm daily; keno from 10am; and pokies from 9am. The conference centre is the leading purpose built conference facility in Tasmania.

The hotel also boasts gymnasium facilities such as an indoor heated pool, spa, sauna and exercise equipment. There's a 9 hole putting course, barbeque area, jetty for cruise craft, all weather tennis courts, a visitors information bureau in the main lobby, Thrifty Rent A Car desk, a hairdresser, giftshop, newsagency, fashion boutique and beauty shop.
